Starting To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.
To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.
Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Highly prized gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible to the exact spectral color of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark are diminished in value.
The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits when evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color tone, saturation, and hue will be inconsistent.
Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This is talking about the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.
Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.

"Indeed there is no stone, the colour of which is more delightful to the eye;
for whereas the sight fixes itself with avidity upon the green grass and the
foliage of the trees, we have all the more pleasure in looking upon the
smaragdus, there being no green in existence of a more intense colour than this.
And then, besides, of all the precious stones, this is the only one that feeds
the sight without satiating it. Even when the vision has been fatigued with
intently viewing other objects, it is refreshed by being turned upon this stone;
and lapidaries know of nothing that is more gratefully soothing to the eyes, its
soft green tints being wonderfully adapted for assuaging lassitude, when felt in
those organs" The Natural History, Book XXXVII. The Natural History of Precious
Stones, Chapter 16. Pliny the Elder (23-79)

Fluorite, which was once known as fluorspar, is a mixture of calcium and fluoride. This beautiful stone can be seen in a variety of colors, often more than one color occurring simultaneously in the same crystal. This is called color zoning. This stone can be heated to produce a bi-colored effect, but this is a tedious and costly procedure that is not often used. Therefore, most bi-colored fluorite is natural.
